Roy gets a minor injury and John seems more afraid of what their father is going to do to him, than he is of Roy’s injury. John seems to be more afraid of everything and is constantly trying to get Roy to sit still and behave. Later on in the book Roy has a little moment of rebellion and finally goes to the rockpile. who would soon be turning this corner and entering the dark hall below them” (Baldwin, 1965, pg 2), and from this we can infer that these kids are terrified of their father for reasons unknown. their own latent wickedness in sitting where they sat and made them think of their father …. “The passage of one of the redeemed made them consider …. They talk about how sometimes church-members would look up and wave at them – making them think about their father. The story continues and gives you some background about the people the boys see from their fire escape. John doesn’t care much about the rockpile because he’s afraid of it and the boys who play there. It’s safe to assume John is older than Roy but it’s unclear how much older. Roy is a young child who is desperate to be on the streets and fighting on the rockpile like all the other boys. The first character you’re introduced to (properly) is Roy. I’m not super sure about what year it’s based in but one of the characters is looking at a newspaper advertising a new electric locomotive.

This young family lives in an apartment complex across the street from a rockpile. The Rockpile by James Baldwin is a 6 page story about a family living in New York City – close to the Harlem River. This one took less than 2 minutes to read but it has all the essentials of a story. Most of the short stories I’ve read have been a minimum of like 10 pages (Thanks Mr. I figured this would be perfect to review since it is impossibly short. This is definitely new for me and I don’t usually pick up short stories to read unless I have to. Didn’t give it much thought again only because I didn’t really have many short stories that I felt were worth blogging about. My absolutely beautiful friend Jenny (Hi Jenny!) gave me this suggestion like waaaay back in January (when the world was so different). I thought today would be a good enough day to read a short story and write a review about it. For the past 3 years on this blog all I’ve reviewed is novels (and 1 TV show just because it’s important to me and I needed to blog about it).
